Slavery and the Bible

This week we talked about slavery in the Bible. There are certain aspects of the Bible that are pro-slavery. Chapter 21 of Exodus talks about how to treat slaves. "If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything." Titus 2:9 says, "Tell slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect." Richard Fuller was a Baptist Pastor that used the Bible to advocate the institution of slavery. His argument was that the Bible defines sin and God would not allow what he thought was sinful. He used Leviticus 25:44 to support his argument. "As your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you." Paul also returned a slave to it's master and Jesus never spoke against it. Ephesians 6;5 says, "Alves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ."
