A Western Washington University pro-free speech lecture was interrupted by a group of students who were protesting that absolute free speech was violent. There were signs reading "Advocating for the right to racist, sexist, and transphobic speech is violent" and "Your safe space is violent." These signs were showing that they disagreed with the First Amendment. The question is are they right?
The First Amendment is in the Bill of Rights and because of that it is a fundamental personal right. The First Amendment is the strongest type of right. Should our freedom of speech be censored? Is it violent? Should this right be limited?
There are many cases that have went through the Supreme Court. In the 1971 court case, Cohen v. California, the Supreme Court ruled that lewd and vulgar speech was protected by the First Amendment In another court case in 1973, Miller v. California , indecent speech was also given First Amendment protection.
What is my opinion on this? I believe that people should have complete freedom of speech. Yes there are harsh and inappropriate things said on the internet but we should be able to say what's on our mind. I'm not just saying that just to say it. There have been plenty of times where racial slurs were directed at me but having freedom of speech defines who we are as Americans. It also shapes us. I don't like facing racists and hearing the things they say but, it has taught me to be stronger and keep my head held high.
This blog has also been a tool in right to freedom of speech. In today's society, the First Amendment is stronger. We are about to communicate better and use the clauses of this amendment. Through the internet we are able to petition the government, form assemblies, and spread our religious beliefs and disbeliefs. Through blogging we are also directly using our rights of speech and press. Should the First Amendment be limited? My answer is no.
